Equine Influenza Outbreak in the UK – What Horse Owners Need to Know (April 2026)

A recent rise in Equine Influenza (EI) cases across the UK has raised concern within the equine community. With multiple counties affected and clear patterns emerging, now is the time for horse owners, yard managers, and professionals to review their biosecurity practices.

Current Situation

As of April 2026, 27 counties have reported confirmed cases of Equine Influenza, with 34 horses infected.

What Are the Common Risk Factors?

Analysis of recent cases points to three key trends:

1. Vaccination Status

The majority of affected horses are either unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination history.
Only a small number of cases have been reported in vaccinated horses, and some of these involved recent imports from Europe.

2. New Arrivals

A significant proportion of cases involve horses that are new to a yard or recently travelled. Movement between yards, competitions, and imports continues to be a major risk factor.

3. Age

Many of the affected horses are under 6 years old, with a notable concentration in 4–5-year-olds. Younger horses may have less developed immunity, especially if vaccination protocols are incomplete.

What is Equine Influenza?

Equine Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by influenza A viruses (primarily H3N8). It spreads rapidly through:

  • Direct horse-to-horse contact
  • Airborne droplets (coughing and sneezing)
  • Contaminated equipment, clothing, and surfaces

Although it is not a notifiable disease in the UK, it poses a serious threat to the equine industry, particularly in competition yards, racing environments, and livery settings.

Recognising the Symptoms

Symptoms often appear suddenly and can range from mild to severe.

Early Signs

  • High temperature (up to 41°C)
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Clear nasal discharge (which may become thick and yellow)
  • Lethargy and reduced appetite

More Severe Cases

  • Intense coughing fits
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Muscle soreness and stiffness
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia

While most horses recover, some may experience long-term respiratory issues or reduced performance.

Incubation, Recovery and Spread

  • Incubation period: 1–5 days (commonly 2–3 days)
  • Horses can spread the virus before showing symptoms
  • Virus shedding can continue for up to 10 days

Recovery Times

  • Mild cases: 1–2 weeks
  • Severe cases: up to 6 weeks

Rest is essential. Returning a horse to work too soon increases the risk of complications.

Prevention and Biosecurity

With no quick fix once infection is present, prevention is key.

Essential Measures

  • Keep vaccinations up to date
  • Isolate new arrivals for at least 21 days
  • Monitor temperature daily for new or returning horses
  • Minimise unnecessary visitors

On the Yard

  • Provide hand sanitiser and disinfectant foot dips
  • Avoid sharing equipment
  • Keep visiting horses separate from resident horses
  • Disinfect stables, especially at events or camps

At Events

  • Avoid nose-to-nose contact with unfamiliar horses
  • Do not share water sources
  • Limit grazing in shared areas
