Why do water troughs go green? 

They go green because slimy layers of microorganisms known as biofilms build up on wet surfaces. These microorganisms then create the right environment for Algae growth, turning your tank green. Biofilms and Algae are toxic to animals and can cause colic and diarrhoea. It also makes the water less palatable to drink reducing their intake of water.

Water not only hydrates your horse but it plays an important part in lubricating food as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract, preventing impaction and colic. Clean water also supports the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the hind-gut, which aid in digestion and nutrient absorption. Vital for the overall health of your horse.

Regular cleaning and treatment of your water trough will not only provide your horses with clean drinking water but it will also prevent cross contamination via the water source when there are multiple horses using the water trough. Diseases such as Streptococcus Equi can remain active in water for up to six weeks.

How to calculate the volume of your trough:

Volume = length x width x height (in cm) 
Divide your answer by 1000 to get the volume in Litres

Instructions for Best Results

  1. Clean your trough 
  2. Spray your trough inside and out with EndoSan 3 
  3. Leave for 60 minutes
  4. Refill your trough 
  5. Add EndoSan disinfectant as it fills so that it mixes well 
  6. Do an initial test with a EndoSan test strip once the tank has filled. 
  7. Check and test again 2 hours later 
  8. Dosage levels should sit at 30ppm (colors on the test strip match the colors on the tub).

How Often to Add EndoSan Water Treatment

The number of animals drinking from the trough, the weather, the hotter it is the more it will need doing and whether your trough is in direct sunlight or shade. Debris will still need removing from your troughs. 

Use the 0-100ppm Endosan test strips to maintain the EndoSan levels in your troughs. 30ppm (colors on the test strip match the colours on the tub)
